The dangers of too much tanning: Elle Mapherson displayed leathery-looking skin on her legs as she did the school run today

We've all been warned of the dangers off too much sun, but often people forget to put sunscreen on their legs.

And it appears Elle Macpherson is guilty of such a crime, judging by photographs of the supermodel out today.

Wearing a pair of cropped leggings, the slightly leathery-looking skin on Elle's leg was clear to see as she stepped out in London on the school run.

But the 48-year-old star appeared unaware of the fragile skin on her legs, and flashed a huge smile at photographers as she headed to the gym.

Mother-of-two Elle teamed her leggings with a red skirt, white T-shirt, black zip-up jacket and white trainers as she fitted in her workout.

The outfit was in sharp contrast to Elle's usual school run gear, which has included in the past red leather trousers, sky-high heels and huge volumised hair.

However, speaking recently Elle actually addressed claims she gets dressed for the school run - insisting the chic wardrobe is actually her work wear.

She said on the Graham Norton Show: 'What people don't know is that I'm actually on my way to work so they say, "Why does she dress up for the school run?."

'It's like, "Hello, it's half past 8 in the morning and I go to work like everybody else." '

Meanwhile, it was announced today that Elle will be hosting a new show on NBC called Fashion Star, which will see aspiring designers compete for the chance to win a multi-million dollar contract to launch their own brands.

She will be joined by celebrity mentor Jessica Simpson - the perfect choice for the role given that she has already built a clothing empire worth nearly $1billion.

Ben Silver, whose company Electus will produce the show, said: 'We are excited to team up with NBC to discover and develop the next major fashion brand for retailers around the country and deliver the next breakout television show for an audience that is increasingly obsessed with fashion.

'The stakes are higher than any other competitive reality show, as Fashion Star pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to launch a major national brand.'
